Drums of victory echoed at White House to celebrate Trump’s historic comeback

The rhythmic beat of dhol drums welcomed Republican supporters at the White House early on Wednesday, celebrating Donald Trump’s return after a four-year hiatus from the political spotlight. Once it became clear he had defied obstacles to reclaim the presidency, a lively group of his supporters gathered to mark what they saw as an extraordinary comeback. “This is the greatest political comeback in US history,” declared Sajid Tarar, leader of “Muslims for Trump,” who brought a group of drum-beaters, Muslim, and Sikh supporters to celebrate. Tarar, who had recited Surah Fateha at Trump’s inauguration in 2016, was emphatic about Trump’s return: “He will make America great again.” Standing beside Tarar was Irfan Yaqub, who explained his support: “Trump at least pledged to end the war in the Middle East, which Kamala Harris never committed to. That’s why I’m here celebrating his victory.” Trump’s supporters, who drummed outside the White House, had travelled from the Maryland

Editorial: Govt’s legislative agenda has so far seemed focused less on ‘actual problems’

For all its stress on "supremacy of parliament", the ruling coalition has wasted no opportunity to reiterate where its allegiances truly lie. from The Dawn News - Home https://ift.tt/6dKEe0U

The extension game

IT was yet another bizarre night. In less than an hour, the government managed to steamroll a series of laws through both Houses of Parliament amid the opposition’s raucous protests. There was not even debate on these highly consequential pieces of legislation that are bound to impact the entire political spectrum in the country. One can only describe it as yet another act of deceptiveness on the part of the current dispensation that seems to have mastered the art. Besides the anticipated increase in the number of Supreme Court judges and changes in the Practice and Procedure Act, which is meant to further tighten the executive’s hold on the country’s top judiciary, parliament also pushed through a number of controversial bills. An earlier one, a few days ago, gave greater detention powers to the security forces. Reportedly, a controversial military-related clause had previously been dropped from the initial draft of the recently passed 26th Constitutional Amendment. In this instanc

Kamala or Trump? US decides today

Both sides say they are encouraged by early turnout, with over 78 million people having voted already, around half of the total number of ballots cast in 2020. In the final days of this campaign, both sides are flooding social media sites and TV and radio stations with a last round of ad campaigns, and racing to knock on doors and make calls. The Democratic vice president and the Republican fo

Red Bull’s Verstappen wins chaotic Brazilian Grand Prix in the rain

F1 Drivers’ Championship leader Max Verstappen won a chaotic, rain-lashed Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday, roaring back from 17th on the grid to reignite his push for a fourth successive world title. The Red Bull driver came home ahead of Alpine duo Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, who benefitted when the race was earlier red-flagged, with title rival and pole-sitter Lando Norris only managing a sixth-place finish in his McLaren. The victory was Verstappen’s first in a grand prix since Spain in June and he now boasts a 62-point lead in the championship with three races left in the season. “You know what that is? Simply lovely,” said Verstappen on the team radio as he crossed the finish line. George Russell was fourth in a Mercedes with Charles Leclerc fifth in a Ferrari while McLaren’s Oscar Piastri was seventh. Yuki Tsunoda of RB Racing was eighth with teammate Liam Lawson in ninth and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton filling out the top 10. The race was suspended on lap 32 after a huge cra

Imran’s abducted lawyer Intezar Panjutha recovered

ISLAMABAD: As PTI founding chairman Imran Khan’s lawyer Intezar Hussain Panjutha was recovered on Saturday night, the party labelled the development as scripted and called on the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo motu notice of the matter. The PTI also demanded that an FIR be filed against the attorney general, who claimed in the high court that Mr Panjutha would be produced in court within 24 hours, suggesting he was aware of his whereabouts. It is worth mentioning that the PTI leader was recovered by police in Attock as he was allegedly being transported by his kidnappers. Police later shifted him to hospital. PTI leader Shaukat Basra, while speaking to Dawn , said the party rejected the video footage and viewed it as ‘scripted drama’. “We demand action against those who abducted him [Mr Panjutha] on October 8 from Islamabad, and those who made these videos are all part of the abduction and cover-up,” he said. Mr Basra questioned how the attorney general gave a statement in

New payment model for IPPs without ‘profit bonanza’

• Govt wants to cut capacity costs, hold power producers accountable for ‘excess profiteering’ • ‘Unhappy’ companies blame heavy taxes for costly electricity tariffs • Independent generators say ‘forced’ renegotiations will damage investors’ confidence A NEW financial model proposed by the government to 18 independent power producers (IPPs) will significantly reduce their capacity payments and also recover “excess profits” made by these companies in the past, senior managers of three IPPs and a government official told Dawn . A government task force is currently renegotiating the terms of power purchase agreements with four IPPs set up under the 1994 power policy and 14 under the 2002 policy. The present round of negotiations with the 18 IPPs, aimed at slashing the burden of capacity payments and reducing electricity tariffs, started last Monday. The talks are expected to conclude in the next couple of weeks. The current negotiations, the task force member said, “are part of the
