At 100, Kissinger basks in praise, with no accountability

WASHINGTON: Henry Kissinger, whose very name is synonymous with US diplomacy, turns 100 on Saturday feted by the American elite as others seethe that the ruthless Cold War figure has never faced accountability. From opening the door to China to plotting an endgame to the Vietnam war to unapologetically backing dictators who were anti-Soviet, Kissinger wielded influence like few before or after him, serving as both a top diplomat and security adviser to presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. Instantly recognisable for his bookishly thick glasses and a sharp-witted monotone that never lost touch of his native German, Kissinger was first an academic and his intellectual gifts are acknowledged begrudgingly even by some of his harshest critics. Since leaving office in 1977, Kissinger’s brand of realpolitik — the coldly cynical championing of power and national interests — has largely fallen out of favour as his successors preached moralism, but Kissinger himself has if anything enjoye...

May 9 rioters must face justice like Capitol Hill attackers: PM

KARACHI: Vowing to bring the perpetrators of May 9 violence to justice, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Friday that no one should have any objections if the government punished these rioters under the law, the way the United States did to its citizens for storming the Capitol Hill building in 2021 . Addressing the groundbreaking ceremony of the much-delayed K-IV water supply project at the CM House, he said justice demanded that the rioters be punished like those who stormed Capitol Hill. “If that [American] punishment is legal, then no one should object if we do so under our law for the desecration of [the memorials of] our martyrs,” he added. The prime minister said politics of chaos culminated on May 9 in the form of the desecration of the memorials of the nation’s martyrs and ghazis and security installations. “Strings of the May 9 riots are being pulled abroad and the desecration of martyrs’ memorials and installations at the instigation of Imran Khan is the darkest chapt...

Westernised transgenders or colonised transphobes? Examining the FSC verdict on the Transgender Rights Act

Image
Hailed as one of the most progressive pieces of legislation internationally, the passage of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2018 marked a major milestone for the advancement of transgender rights in Pakistan. Summarily, the Act prohibits discrimination against a transgender person in areas such as education, employment, and healthcare. It directs the central and provincial governments to provide welfare schemes in these areas such as reforming health curricula to address basic health issues of the transgender and intersex community, besides other measures that ensure the full inclusion and participation of transgender persons in mainstream society via rehabilitation, vocational training, and employment schemes. Under the Act, offences such as compelling or enticing a transgender person to beg or enter forced or bonded labour, denying a transgender person the right of passage to a public place, forcing or causing a transgender person to leave their household or vi...

Chinese hackers spying on US critical infrastructure, says Western intelligence

WASHINGTON: A state-sponsored Chinese hacking group has been spying on a wide range of US critical infrastructure organisations, from telecommunications to transportation hubs, Western intelligence agencies and Microsoft said on Wednesday. The espionage has also targeted the US island territory of Guam, home to strategically important American military bases, Microsoft said in a report, adding that “mitigating this attack could be challenging.” While China and the United States routinely spy on each other, analysts say this is one of the largest known Chinese cyber-espionage campaigns against American critical infrastructure. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Thursday the hacking allegations were a “collective disinformation campaign” from the Five Eyes countries, a reference to the intelligence sharing grouping of countries made up of the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the UK. Mao said the campaign was launched by the US for geopolitical reasons and tha...
